Overview

The Marangu route is the second popular route only to the Machame route, Marangu has hut accommodations with separate long-drop toilets, and is the second easiest only to Rongai route and most gradual. This route may be completed in 5 days, but it’s best to take the 6 days, spending an extra day at Horombo hut to allow more time to acclimatize to the altitude.

Description

Day 1: Arusha - Marangu Gate (1860M) - Mandara Hut(2700M)

We will pick you up from your hotel and head to Marangu Gate (1860m) at Kilimanjaro national park. You need to complete the necessary paperwork to start your trek. After all the formalities you can start trekking through the dense rainforest. The beautiful vegetation is home to black and white colobus monkeys. It takes 4 hrs. to reach your destination of the day – Mandara Hut. After taking a rest for some time your guide can take you to Maundi Crater. It is a wonderful place to get a view of the Kenyan interior.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (1860M) - Horombo (2700M)

After breakfast, you will leave Mandara hut and at a short distance, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moor zone. After walking for approximately 4-6 hours, you can see Horombo hut at an altitude of 3700m. Once you reach there you will get a beautiful view of Mawenzi, Kibo, and the extensive plain of the Maasai Steppe. You will enjoy your overnight stay at Horombo hut where we will serve you breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 3 : Horombo Hut (3700M) - Zebra Rocks (4020M) - Horombo Hut.

After breakfast, you will leave Horombo hut, and you need to adjust to the change in altitude and temperature. You can call it acclimatization day. It increases your chance of success in reaching the summit. After a healthy breakfast, you will start trekking for 4-5 hours to reach Zebra Rocks at an altitude of 4020m. The rock formation has distinctive black and white stripes on it hence named as zebra rocks. You will have your warm lunch once you return to Horombo Hut. In the afternoon relax and regain your strength for the next day hike. There will be an overnight stay at the Horombo hut where you will get evening snacks. We serve you with

Day 4:Horombo Hut (3700M) - Kibo Hut (4700M)

Today we cross the lunar desert of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Hut (4700m), at the bottom of the Kibo Crater wall by early afternoon. There is no running water at Kibo Hut. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night. Mawenzi Turn hut to Kibo Hut is 5-6 hours walking.

Day 5: Kibo Hut(4,750M) - Summit(5,895M) - Horombo Hut (3,720M)

Around 2330hrs, you will wake up and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night, and this is where the going gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer point (17225ft/5250m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (18639ft/5 681m), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone screed, requiring a great physical and mental effort.

From Gillman’s Point, you will normally come across snow up to Uhuru peak (19341ft/5895m), the highest point in Africa. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend, taking photographs before the 3 hours descent back to Kibo hut. After a short rest, you gather all the gear you left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours) for your overnight. Later in the evening, you enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned certificate for your determination, filled with memories and stirring emotions.

Day 6: Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate; Elevation (ft.): 12,205 ft. to 6,046 ft

Today we will descend past Mandara hut to Marangu Gate, successful climbers will receive their summit certificates. From here you will be transferred to Moshi in your hotel for dinner and overnight. (Alternative transferred to JRO for departure). Horombo hut to Marangu Gate. (6-7 hours walking)
